Dimensional Grey Color | Spokane Hair Stylist
Today, I had the pleasure of working with a lovely guest who came to me with a goal that’s becoming increasingly popular— adding dimension to her naturally grey hair. She wasn’t looking for a drastic change, but rather a subtle, elevated transformation that would bring more life and movement to her silver strands. Grey hair can be beautiful, especially when it has the right depth and tone, and that’s exactly what we set out to achieve.
To create more dimension, I used a combination of highlights and lowlights placed strategically between foils. This technique is perfect for using the natural beauty of her silver hair while adding dimension.
I started by identifying the areas where her grey was less vibrant. In those sections, I added highlights to lift and brighten, bringing those parts up to a more silvery hue. For these highlights, I used Paul Mitchell Synchrolift+ with 10 volume developer. This choice gave us a gentle yet effective lift, ensuring the hair stayed healthy while achieving the brightness we needed.
For the sections of her hair that already had beautiful, natural silver, instead of lifting or coloring them, I placed them in foils with conditioner to protect and preserve the hair while we worked on the surrounding areas. This technique also helped keep the silver strands isolated from the lifting process, ensuring they remained untouched and radiant.
Next, I added lowlights using Paul Mitchell The Color in 7NN, part of their grey coverage series. The 7NN shade provided a natural-looking depth without appearing too dark or harsh against her silver. These lowlights filled in the gaps and added a richer contrast, giving her hair that multi-dimensional look.
After lifting, I toned the highlighted sections with Paul Mitchell The Demi in 10P, a pearly ash tone that neutralized any residual warmth and enhanced the silvery finish. The result was soft, luminous highlights that blended seamlessly into her natural grey, complementing both the lowlights and her overall tone.
The final look was nothing short of stunning—her hair had dimension, shine, and a soft elegance that felt fresh and modern. She was thrilled with how natural yet elevated the result looked. This is the power of working with grey hair rather than against it.
Grey hair doesn’t have to be flat or aging—it can be a striking and sophisticated statement when treated with the right techniques. If you’re ready to embrace and enhance your natural silver, highlights and lowlights might be the perfect solution to bring your hair to life.
Whether you’re fully grey or just starting to blend your greys, I’d love to help you create a custom color plan that celebrates your hair exactly as it is—just a little brighter.
